Backwards Compatible

TSL provide total business continuity by making all of their UHF RFID readers compatible with the same software environment. The 3138 Reader uses TSL’s latest ASCII 3 protocol for faster and easier application development, yet remains fully compatible with software written for older TSL readers.  This sophisticated ASCII protocol provides the developer a powerful set of commands and parameters that carry out multiple actions locally within the reader. This approach enables multiple tag operations to be executed using simple pre-configured commands which speeds up integration of the reader into applications.

TSL are pleased to announce the release of a patent-pending new feature called ‘Command Scan’ that enables the use of barcode scanning to configure or otherwise adjust parameters of the RFID reader. This simple but powerful ability opens up a whole world of possibilities for developers to configure or commission TSL RFID Readers using convenient, time-saving methods. This new feature works with the new generation 3166 and 3138 UHF RFID RAIN Readers.

  • A free upgrade for any 3138 or 3166 Reader fitted with a 2D Barcode Imager
  • Scan special Barcodes to execute ASCII Protocol commands.
  • No need to connect each Reader to a PC for configuration
  • Developers could sent out Command Scan 2D Barcodes within emails or apps, allowing remote users to simply scan the on-screen barcode to configure their 3166 Reader

Command Scan Examples

  • Command Scan can be used as a convenient, time-saving method of changing the Bluetooth mode of the Reader.  Users can swap instantly between one of the four Bluetooth modes by scanning the appropriate Barcode.
  • Command Scan could also be used in a commissioning phase to edit the Autorun (AUTO.TXT) file of each Reader, without having to physically connect each reader to a PC.
  • Other uses of Command Scan could involve:
    • Setting the Reader to filter for only a certain type of tag and/or EPC range during each UHF inventory
    • Changing the Reader behaviour for a double-click of the trigger
    • Changing or muting the reader volume
    • Temporarily limiting the dBm power level of the Reader antenna, for close-range UHF reading only
    • Resetting the Reader back to its default configuration
  • TSL is thrilled to give you free access to the Command Scan website to select or generate your own QR codes: https://commandscan.tsl.com
  • And many more possibilities! See the full list of ASCII Protocol commands for inspiration

Problem

On Windows 11 computers, the TSL RFID Reader does not appear in the list of pairable Bluetooth Devices.

Overview

Bluetooth classic is disabled by default on Windows 11 machines. If you use TSL 11xx or 21xx readers (or 31xx readers in Bluetooth classic mode) and these do not appear in the list of discoverable devices you may need to set ‘Bluetooth devices discovery’ to ‘Advanced’ within Windows 11’s Bluetooth settings.

This applies to the following TSL Bluetooth RFID readers:

  • 1128
  • 1153
  • 1166
  • 2128
  • 2173
  • 2128L
  • 2128P
  • 3166

Method:

  1. Right-click on the Windows 11 logo in the taskbar & choose ‘Settings’
  2. Click on ‘Bluetooth & devices’
  3. Click on ‘View more devices’
  4. Scroll down to the ‘Device settings’ area
  5. Use the drop-down list to change ‘Bluetooth devices discovery’ from ‘Default’ to ‘Advanced’

Android SDK Update 2024.05

This new release of the native Android SDK introduces ASCII Protocol 3.0 – the backwardly compatible, evolution of TSL’s ASCII Protocol 2. The ASCII Protocol 3.0 update provides support for TSL Series 3 Readers, such as the recently introduced 3166 UHF RFID RAIN Reader.

Additions to the protocol include:

  • The LinkProfileCommand to allow access to the new, faster Series 3 RF Modes.
  • A SelectPause parameter, on the ReadTransponderCommand, to provide the carrier wave needed for optimal reading of Magnus S3 temperature Sensor Tags e.g. HID Sense Passive, Axzon etc…
  • A new SystemCommand that can be used to alter the baud rate of the ePop-Loq connection and adjust the volume of system sounds, such as the power on beep.
  • An AlertVolume parameter, on the AlertCommand, that allows fine-grained control of the alert volume (0-100%).

See the included “Version History.txt” file for full details.

The SDK also sees the introduction of:

  • An improved Inventory Sample Project that can access the Series 3 Reader RF Modes for significantly faster tag read rates.
  • A new Sample Code project, for accessing Magnus S3 Temperature Sensor Tags demonstrating all the steps required to reliably access temperature, sensor and RSSI values.
  • A reworked LicenceKey Project that demonstrates the use of an Asymmetric Public Key Cryptography signature approach.

The v2.8.0 SDK is built for Android API Level 34.
