Android SDK Update 2024.05

This new release of the native Android SDK introduces ASCII Protocol 3.0 – the backwardly compatible, evolution of TSL’s ASCII Protocol 2. The ASCII Protocol 3.0 update provides support for TSL Series 3 Readers, such as the recently introduced 3166 UHF RFID RAIN Reader.

Additions to the protocol include:

  • The LinkProfileCommand to allow access to the new, faster Series 3 RF Modes.
  • A SelectPause parameter, on the ReadTransponderCommand, to provide the carrier wave needed for optimal reading of Magnus S3 temperature Sensor Tags e.g. HID Sense Passive, Axzon etc…
  • A new SystemCommand that can be used to alter the baud rate of the ePop-Loq connection and adjust the volume of system sounds, such as the power on beep.
  • An AlertVolume parameter, on the AlertCommand, that allows fine-grained control of the alert volume (0-100%).

See the included “Version History.txt” file for full details.

The SDK also sees the introduction of:

  • An improved Inventory Sample Project that can access the Series 3 Reader RF Modes for significantly faster tag read rates.
  • A new Sample Code project, for accessing Magnus S3 Temperature Sensor Tags demonstrating all the steps required to reliably access temperature, sensor and RSSI values.
  • A reworked LicenceKey Project that demonstrates the use of an Asymmetric Public Key Cryptography signature approach.

The v2.8.0 SDK is built for Android API Level 34.

New Android UHF RFID SDK update now available

TSL® have updated their native Android SDK to version 2.5.0 to meet the Google Play Android 12 (API level 31) requirement that comes into effect on November 1, 2022.

If your app is targeting API level 31+ then

  1. you will need to update your app to use the Rfid.AsciiProtocol library  (v3.0.0), included in the latest SDK.
  2. You will also need to update your app to issue a request for Bluetooth® permissions, where appropriate.

The latest SDK contains updated Sample Projects to demonstrate one way to do this – all built against the latest API Level 33.

In addition, three Sample Projects (Inventory, ReadWrite and ConfigureBarcode) have been re-written to demonstrate the use of the SDK in the latest Android Studio, Basic Activity app template.

This release also addresses a null pointer error that occurred when running previous Rfid.AsciiProtocol libraries (v2.5.0 or lower) on Android 12+ devices.

A brand new Android app has just been published by TSL® on the Google Play store. 2173 Explorer is a dedicated app built to demonstrate the performance, functionality and versatility of the 2173 Bluetooth® LF/HF RFID Reader.

The app demonstrates how, using the 2173 Reader, a simple inventory of Items, tagged with a wide variety of HF and LF tags or 1D and 2D barcodes, can be achieved. This inventory is then available to other apps, on your device, using the familiar Android sharing dialog.

The video below shows various LF and HF RFID tags being scanned by the TSL® 2173 Bluetooth® LF/HF RFID Reader paired to an Android smartphone. At the end of the video a 2D barcode is scanned using the (optional) 1D/2D Barcode Imager:

Features include:
▪ Generate a list of unique HF/LF transponders and barcode item identifiers
▪ Read the memory of tags – Mifare Classic, ISO15693 and SRX tag types are currently supported.
▪ Share the list of scanned items or save it to the Android device.
▪ Control detection of the HF and LF tag types supported by the 2173 Reader.
▪ Configure the operation of the 2173 trigger to match your scanning requirements.

2173 Explorer employs the same, sophisticated TSL ASCII 2 protocol used in TSL’s UHF reader range which provides developers with a powerful set of commands to carry out complex RFID transponder operations in a simple, easy-to-grasp way. Developers can take advantage of the comprehensive, free SDKs provided by TSL® to develop in Xamarin, Java, Objective C, Swift or .NET.

TSL® are pleased to announce the full release of version 2.2.1 of the Android SDK for TSL® UHF RFID Readers. This is a significant update bringing new commands such as BlockPermalockCommand and FindTagCommand, along with new Sample Projects to demonstrate their use. Three new sample projects have been provided:

TagFinder

Basic tag finder implementation using either the InventoryCommand or the new FindTagCommand, if available.

  • A target tag EPC is entered and then the Reader’s trigger is held down – the App then continuously updates the display
  • with the the relative signal strength (as a percentage) until the trigger is released.
  • When using a Reader that supports the new FindTag command (e.g. 2128) there will also be audio feedback while scanning.

BlockPermalock

Demonstration of partial locking of Tag User memory (requires 1166 or 21xx UHF Reader and suitable UHF tags).

  • Note: this project will make permanent changes to the tags it modifies – use with care.

HFLFSupport

A sample project using the new InventoryTagCommand (for HF/LF tags).

  • Connect an ASCII 2 HF/LF Reader (e.g. 2173) and single press the trigger with an HF or LF tag in range.
  • The identifier for the detected tag will be displayed along with the type of tag scanned.
  • Also included are some examples of the RfPassThroughCommand to control the HF/LF RF Module

Additionally, Apps built with the library can now be tested with the Emulator (however, no Readers will be available).

The Rfid.AsciiProtocol library has been updated to support ASCII Protocol 2.5 which features:

  • A new FindTagCommand for use with Readers that support it (e.g. 2128, 2166, 2128p, etc..)
  • Added the BlockPermalockTransponderCommand. This new command is supported on the 1166, 2166 and all 2128/IH21 variants (requires tags that support the command).
  • Added Power Handle info to VersionInformationCommand.
  • Added Phase and Channel Frequency parameters to the Inventory and Read commands.
  • Duplicate Removal parameters implemented.
  • Duplicate visuals can be turned on/off.
  • AudibleAlertMode parameter defines when tone sounds.
  • Created BatteryStatusResponder to monitor asynchronous battery level notifications.
  • Added BatteryHealth and BatteryService information classes.
  • Added ShowRegionCommand.
  • AlertCommand now has additional parameters for controlling visuals on Readers with Antenna LEDs.
  • MountCommand implemented.
  • Added auto-reconnect parameters to SleepCommand.
  • Implemented BluetoothCommand.
  • Added new AutorunCommand and deprecated the separate Read/Write/Execute Autorun Commands.
  • Added SerialHidCommand – and special Responder to capture responses
  • Added a SignalStrengthResponder to capture the RSSI or percentage values from FindTag or Inventory commands
  • A new InventoryTagCommand and corresponding HfLfTransponderData for use with HF/LF Readers
  • A new RfPassThroughCommand for the 2173 HF/LF RF module
