RFID Explorer Update iOS

Apple introduced a breaking change in their APIs that was only present in the US version of the OS. This prevented US devices running iOS 17 or higher from exporting inventories in RFID Explorer.

TSL has identified and resolved the issue so the latest version of RFID Explorer for iOS can now export inventories again.

About RFID Explorer:

RFID Explorer Logo

RFID Explorer is a dedicated App built to demonstrate the performance, functionality and versatility of TSL® Bluetooth® RAIN® RFID UHF Readers.  It also serves as demonstration of TSL’s powerful ASCII protocol (see above), having been built around configurable ‘ASCII’ commands.

The v1.6.0 release of the TSL iOS SDK is here! With a new FindTag Sample project (implemented in Swift/SwiftUI) and an updated framework supporting ASCII Protocol 2.5, this release is a significant upgrade to our iOS SDK.

New commands include:

  • TSLFindTagCommand (for series 21xx Readers) – controls the Reader’s tag finder operation
  • TSLBlockPermalockTransponderCommand – to allow tags to be block permalocked
  • TSLAutorunCommand – allows the SD-Card’s ‘auto.txt’ file to be read, written or deleted.

The latest TSLAsciiCommands framework is now available in the new XCFramework format for Xcode 12 users. We have also audited the API to improve type-safety in Swift apps.

Finally, the included documentation has been completely overhauled and now provides a fresh, modern look, an updated ‘Getting Started’ section, improved enum type documentation and both ObjC and Swift interfaces for all commands.

This release can be downloaded as a zip file here (free registration is required to download files).

Easy method to submit apps compatible with TSL UHF RFID Readers to the App Store

If you wish to publish an App to the iTunes App Store (or the B2B store) that supports a TSL iOS-Compatible device then Technology Solutions (UK) Ltd will need to obtain approval for your app against the appropriate hardware in the MFi program.

If you fail to complete this step:

If you have missed the statements within our SDKs (and on ASCIIProtocol.com) and do not send us the information listed below, then you will likely receive an App store rejection email from Apple similar to below:

“We are unable to post your app to the App Store at this time because your app has not been authorized by the accessory manufacturer to work with the MFi accessory:

com.uk.tsl.rfid

To resolve this issue, please contact the accessory manufacturer to request your app be added to the MFi Product Plan form.”

We require the following information:

  1. The TSL devices your App will support
  2. The name of the App as it will appear in the App Store – ensure that hyphenation, white space and spelling match the store name exactly
  3. The App version number
  4. Indicate if this is an update to an existing App or a new App
  5. Indicate whether the App can be used independently of the TSL Device(s)
  6. The App bundle Id
  7. All External Accessory Protocols your App supports (ensure ‘com.uk.tsl.rfid’ is included)
  8. A functional description of your application
  9. The App Category
  10. The name of the developer that will submit the app to the App Store

Please send all of the above information to support@tsl.com. We will submit the above details exactly as provided. Be aware that your App will be rejected by the App Store review process if the App details that you provide to us are incorrect.

Further information

  • If you have separate Apps for iPhone and iPad then please submit a separate set of details for each App.
  • When the App has received MFi approval we will supply you with the appropriate Product Plan ID (PPID) numbers to include in your App Store submission.
  • When submitting your App to the App Store it is essential that you include the PPID numbers in the Review Notes section of your submission.
  • If you need any further information contact support@tsl.com.

We can’t wait to see your great Apps!

New firmware is now available for the 1128 Bluetooth® UHF RFID reader, the 1153 Bluetooth®UHF RFID reader and the 1166 Bluetooth® Rugged UHF RFID reader.

This release allows a reader, connected in SPP mode to an iOS device and application, to reverse the existing master/slave role, remember the last connection and attempt to reconnect automatically when it is powered-on.

This greatly simplifies the use of the readers as, after they have been paired and connected to an application once, all that needs to be done is to power them on and use them.

This behaviour is off by default and is currently only applicable to iOS devices. We hope to make this available for other devices including Android in early 2017.

An Application Note is available, describing in more detail how to use this new feature.

If you are building iOS Apps using the TSL iOS SDK then you will need to use Xcode 7 (or lower) to build your Apps.

The recently released Apple Xcode IDE v 8.0 (8A218a) has an issue affecting all Apps linking to the ExternalAccessory framework that do not also use the Wireless Accessory Configuration (WAC) capability – this issue prevents Apps from building successfully.

We have made Apple aware of this issue (as have many other developers whose products use the ExternalAccessory Framework) and continue to seek a workaround that will allow our developers to use the latest iOS developer tools with our iOS SDK as soon as possible.

We will post updates here when any new information becomes available.

RFID Explorer

We are pleased to announce that v2.4.10 of  TSL’s RFID Explorer App is now available to download from iTunes. RFID Explorer helps you explore the performance, functionality and versatility of Technology Solutions’ high performance UHF RFID Readers. The updates include:

A configurable filter on the tag EPC value has been added to the Inventory screen. By specifying a section of the tag EPC to match against other non-matching tags can be excluded from appearing in the list of tags.

Sharing from the Inventory screen has also been improved – results are now shared as a file (.csv). This allows more choice from the sharing panel e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox etc… and better import to Apps such as Numbers.

An SD Card manager screen is now provided to examine and manipulate the AUTO.TXT and LOG.TXT files on the reader:
The contents of the reader’s AUTO.TXT file can be viewed, modified, shared and/or deleted.

The Log file can be downloaded and shared in three ways:

    • Everything: The entire contents of the log file
    • Filtered: Contains just the EPC and/or bar-code values from the log file
    • Uniques: Contains only the unique EPC and/or bar-code values from the log file

This update also fixes an issue with long EPCs (256 bit or greater) in the Read/Write screen as well as other minor Bug fixes.

RFID Explorer can be downloaded from iTunes here. Requires iOS 7.1 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
